Obedience to Jesus

I think it’s important, as we explore becoming a glorious wife, that we ground ourselves in our relationship to Jesus first.  In that way, we know what obedience, submission, humility mean.

Jesus tells us, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)  To obey means to hear, or to listen to.   In the Old Testament, it meant to follow the commandments of God, to do what he tells us to do.   If God tells you to do something, you do it without question because you know that God has your best interest at heart, and because when we obey God, things turn out as they should.

There are things Jesus commands us to do, according to the Gospel, but I first want to give a thorough understanding of obedience.  Jesus was obedient to the Cross.  That means, he first crucified His own will.  He subordinated His own will to the Father’s.   As humans, we have our own desire to do things, our own choices we want to make.  But as Christians, we have to submit ourselves and bring our own will under that of Jesus.

To obey Jesus is to obey the Gospel and be saved, to fulfill His joy which is in the Holy Spirit, to turn from sin and live a holy life, to be a part of His Church.   We are commanded to be a part of the Great Commission.  As women, our first mission is our families, and then if we are married, we are to be a part of our husband’s work.
