Holiness

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,   Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:  Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.  Ephesians 4:17-19

When you are a child of God, God expects you to walk in moral and spiritual excellence.  The Apostle Peter tells us that God expects us to be holy, because we serve a holy God.  Men become blinded by their own sin nature and do things with their bodies and their minds that obscure God from their lives, and this can eventually lead to depravity which is what happened in Genesis prior to the flood and Sodom and Gomorrah prior to its destruction.

Holiness embraces chastity in man, cleanness and purity of thought and action.  It separates man from beast.  God’s spirit is holy, and when He gives us His spirit, we are able to walk in that.

In marriage, God expects men and women to keep chastity and to be holy.  God reserves our sexuality for marriage.  Chastity goes beyond virginity.  Virginity is the state of man and woman when they have never experienced sex, and the ideal is that they would reserve it for their marriage partner.  Our culture increasingly fights against this, but Christians must not bow to the pressures of this society.   However, with child sexual abuse and sexual assault occurring among teens, this isn’t always possible.  In the absence of virginity, young men and women can continue in chastity, that is allowing God to heal their past and renewing themselves in Him to walk in moral cleanness.

The Bible shows us that when we live lives of holiness and purity, that it glorifies God and it glorifies man.   God calls holiness beauty.   Ephesians 5, discusses the relationship of marriage as an analogy for our relationship to God.  So we can see how important holiness is to that relationship.  Jesus renews the Church and sanctifies it through baptism according to His word, so that He can present to Himself a holy Bride.  In like manner, the husband leads his wife spiritually, so that she can walk in holiness, glorying him.    A chaste and a pure wife is the greatest gift a man can give himself.

As the world increasingly becomes darkened and abounds in its moral decline, Christians must fight against this to be a shining light, holding to the morally excellent way of holiness which is in Jesus Christ.
